One Year Ago…

June 30, 2008

…we pulled into the driveway of our house here in Golden.  Mary & Scott had left us a bottle of wine and two glasses, cat food for Guenivere, an air mattress, laundry detergent and a vase of beautiful fresh flowers.  We certainly felt welcomed.

And twenty years ago on this date, my children and I were headed back to Washington DC after an almost month long trip in which we visited friends and family all along the way and saw the Grand Canyon and Brice.  We also camped, white water rafted the Arkansas river, visited White Sands Missle sight and saw parts of Las Cruces.  We did all this in my new 1988 Subaru station wagon.  I had a friend whose husband said to her, “You can’t let her drive across country with two kids!  What if something happens?  What would she do?”  The friend wisely looked at her husband and said, “You try to stop her.”  There was no stopping us then…and there’s no stopping us now.

On The Radio

June 22, 2008

Just listed to son Ross White, The Poet on the radio.  He and Michael McFee were interviewed by Frank Stasio on The State of Things.  Ross talked about INCH, the little magazine of short poems and really short stories.  I emailed to say how much I enjoyed hearing the show (via computer) and Ross replied that he felt it took an hour for him to say what he had to say in repsponse to each question.  Probably due to the magic of the radio, his replies always sounded unrushed and well thought out.  Michael read some of his one line poems which I love because they can be quickly absorbed and enjoyed.  Maybe Frank Stasio will invite Ross back to read some of his original work.

I’m grateful for the internet which allows me to be the proud parent, often miles away and days after big events actually take place.

Pearson B&B of Golden

June 22, 2008

“Daughter Jane” spent last night at the Pearson B&B of Golden.  Jane, who is daughter Mary’s best friend, says she is a light sleeper.  So when Guenivere the cat yeowled about 4 a.m., Jane got up to see what was going on.  Guenivere wanted to go out but Jane knows that the possibility of coyote and other wild animals is great in this area so she wisely kept the window closed.  Then Jane was up at 6:15, dressed and waiting for John to put his shoes on so they could walk Ranger.  They drove to the base of the South Mesa trail and walked to the top….evidently the spectacular view did not disappoint.  When they returned, fresh fruit, freshly ground coffee and coffee cake (ok, it was store-bought because no oven currenly exists) was waiting.  I’ll be surprised if Jane doesn’t get in a nap sometime today.  She says the Pearson B&B of Golden gets four stars…but I think she might want a few zzzzzs as well!

Kitchen Re-do

June 22, 2008

The kitchen rennovation is in full swing.  Handy Hubby has taken out the walls, down to the studs and is now taking up the floor.  Friends invite us over on a regular basis and while eveything in our house is covered with a layer of cloudy dust, our friends shine like diamonds on a sunny Colorado day.

Good Day

June 6, 2008

I’m participating in the boycott of Chinese-made products June 4 through July 4.  This morning, I went to the grocery store and bought a (Mrs. Lieberman’s) scrub brush – made in USA – and a glass Pyrex baking dish – again, made in the good ol’ USA.  A good day….and it’s only 10 a.m!
